Sulcata Care

Sulcata Size

When born, the sulcata hatchlings are 1.5" - 2" long. As adults, they can grow up to 200 lbs and 36" in shell length. While it may take many years to reach this size, Sulcatas can be 50 lbs in 5 years! They are the worlds 3rd largest tortoise.

Sulcata Hatchling Diet

Sulcatas are vegetarians. In the wild they eat mostly grass. In captivity, they thrive on dark leafy greens, Mazuri Tortoise diet and occasional veggies. Dusting of their food with a calcium and vitamin D power will help ensure they don't get metabolic bone disease.

Adult Sulcata Diet

Adult Sulcats can have the same diet as baby sulcata but the volume is much greater. At this point most tortoises are kept outside in an enclosure or ideally roam free and have a small house to offer shelter. They love grass and weeds that are found in most yards. The occasional treat and Mazuri is recommended and always appreciated!

Baby Sulcata Enclosure

We recommend a 40 gallon long aquarium to start. With this you'll have plenty of room for a year or two. Most reptile substrates such as sand or bark work well. Never pine shavings. Even though Sulcata babies are desert tortoises, they need a shallow water dish to soak and provide humidity. 60% - 80% humidity will ensure a healthy smooth shell.  Lighting is VERY important! Ultraviolet light is needed for your new tortoise to ensure their proper health. Use a UVB bulb and change it out even 6 months even if is still works. The coating on the build will wear out and the light will not provide the much needed UVB. A heat lamp can be used to maintain the proper temperature of the enclosure. Be sure the heat lamp is off to one side. The baby Sulcata needs to be able to control their body temperature by moving from hot areas to cool areas. The overall temperature should be from 70-75 degrees. The hottest area of the tank should not exceed 90 degrees.

Soaking

One of the best ways to keep your sulcata hatchling healthy is to soak them often. We recommend daily soakings. Add 1/2" - 3/4" of warm water in a small plastic container. Place the Sulcata in the water and let soak for 5-15 minutes. Your animal will drink and defecate. This process keeps their digestive track moving and the animal hydrated.

Lifespan

Sulcata tortoises are estimated to live up to 80 years in captivity!
